We sometimes hear voices that authorities have “forced” platforms to provide customers with greater security by forcing verification of account users. First, we prefer to be clear: there are no “account users”—there are simply employees. And second, verification is illusory.
A CBS News investigation revealed that driver accounts for apps like Uber, Lyft, and DoorDash are being massively sold or rented online (including on Facebook Marketplace). Sellers openly admit that a driver’s license or ID is not required to purchase or rent an account.
People who buy or rent other people’s accounts most often do so because they themselves would not pass the mandatory verification process (e.g., due to a criminal record, lack of driving privileges, legal problems, or previous bans from the platforms).
CBS reporters conducted an experiment by ordering eight deliveries through the DoorDash and Uber Eats apps. In two out of eight cases (25%), the order was delivered by completely different people than the ones whose image and name appeared on the phone.
