Four French associations (including Maison des livreurs from Bordeaux and Maison des coursiers from Paris) have filed a criminal complaint with the Paris prosecutor’s office accusing the Uber Eats and Deliveroo platforms of human trafficking and exploitation. These organizations claim that the delivery platforms’ business model is based on “modern slavery.”
The associations decided to take this step to give the case a criminal character. Unlike cases in labor courts (which, for example, determine whether a person working as a delivery driver for the platforms should have a full-time job), the prosecutor’s office must now investigate whether the platforms’ actions constitute human trafficking and the exploitation of vulnerable people. If the prosecutor’s office confirms the accusations, the individuals managing these platforms in France will face criminal charges.
