The platforms Uber and Lyft have filed lawsuits against New York City [USA], seeking to block a law protecting drivers from having their accounts suspended. The law, which is expected to take effect in just a few days, prohibits suspending accounts without just cause and requires a 14-day notice period. This notice period would not apply if a driver is accused of sharing their account with another person, committing financial fraud, or committing acts of violence, sexual assault, or blatant discrimination.
The platforms argue that the implementation of the new regulations would force them to reconsider up to 12,000 cases involving drivers fired after 2019.
A similar law is intended to protect drivers working as delivery drivers for the platforms in the city, but is scheduled to take effect in January 2027.
