During the 114th session of the International Labor Organization (ILO) in Geneva, Convention No. 193 concerning decent work in the platform economy was adopted. This is the first-ever binding international treaty regulating the platform labor market.
This document could be of significant importance to all those working for platforms, including suppliers. The convention guarantees workers:
– freedom of association and the right to collective bargaining regardless of employment status.
– transparency of algorithms and protection from automated management by them.
– the right to a minimum wage, timely payments, and reimbursement of labor costs.
Of course, some countries (such as the United States) voted against it. But in a symbolic way, it ends an era in which platform workers remained “invisible” to legal systems. Now it’s time for governments to take action and national ratifications.
Although real changes in our work are still a long way off.
