The Uber Eats platform has officially acknowledged a debt to the Spanish Social Security Institution (Seguridad Social) of nearly €110 million. This amount stems from unpaid contributions for over 60,000 people working as delivery drivers for the platform, whom the company falsely treated as self-employed instead of employing under an employment contract.

The debt is the result of numerous inspections and investigations conducted by the Spanish Labor Inspectorate, which questioned the company’s business model before the implementation of the so-called “Ley Rider.”

The platform has long challenged these decisions in court. However, the fact that it has acknowledged the debt in its financial statements signals a change in strategy and preparations for settling the enormous arrears.
