The narrative created by the Platforms is filled with concern for those working as Delivery Drivers: we care, we care, we are for you and with you, your safety is our priority.
And what does this look like in reality? Here’s an example from Mexico. The 2025 amendment to Mexican Federal Labor Law formally recognizes Delivery Drivers and Passenger Transport Drivers as employees entitled to social security. However, the “income threshold” is crucial. Full rights are only granted to those earning at least the minimum wage. Furthermore, the Platforms calculate their earnings so unfavorably (by manipulating deductions for the costs of work tools such as fuel, maintenance, etc.) that they reduce the employees’ official earnings. This means they must earn significantly more than the minimum wage to actually obtain social security benefits.
The ploy is simple, and the goal is clear: the less stability employees have in their lives, the better for the Platform. A desperate employee is a cheaper employee.
