Research has been published examining the situation of people working as delivery drivers for platforms in Korea. The study’s author, Mingyu Chen, notes that in the first half of this year alone, 16 delivery drivers died in accidents while on the job in Korea. Despite this, no delivery drivers were punished. Delivery driver deaths are treated as ordinary road accidents, not serious workplace accidents.
The author emphasizes that, in reality, it is the delivery drivers, using algorithms, who shape delivery drivers’ behavior on the road. They lower their base pay, transforming it into “challenges” and “bonuses.” This creates pressure for delivery drivers to work faster, even in heavy rain, heat, or snow. Low pay forces delivery drivers to work long hours despite being tired. According to the author, the only way to reduce the number of accidents is through external inspection of algorithms and a system of guaranteed pay rates.
