The platform Just Eat (known as Pyszne.pl in Poland) has announced the layoff of over 700 delivery workers in Switzerland. Previously, all of these individuals were employed under standard employment contracts. As it has done in many other countries, the platform is shifting to a model that relies exclusively on self-employed contractors. This new model is set to be implemented primarily in major cities—such as Zurich, Bern, Basel, and Winterthur—as well as in eastern Switzerland. In the canton of Ticino, the company already utilizes a fleet partner, while in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, delivery workers will retain their permanent employment contracts, following previous court rulings.
Lukas Streich, head of Just Eat in Switzerland, explains that the decision stems from shifting consumer habits; customers now expect deliveries at unconventional times, such as late in the evening or even in the middle of the night.
