A groundbreaking legal battle has just begun in Italy, brought by the Italian trade union CGIL against Burger King and the delivery platforms Glovo and Deliveroo.

CGIL accuses the fast food chain of co-responsibility for the poor working conditions of those working as delivery partners for the platforms. The filing comes after Italian courts placed Glovo and Deliveroo under receivership in Italy amid allegations of labor exploitation and links to unfair intermediaries.
CGIL alleges that Burger King profits from the labor of individuals employed under extremely unfavorable conditions by the Glovo and Deliveroo platforms. It accuses the company of failing to ensure compliance with ethical standards by its subcontractors. CGIL points out that Burger King promotes itself as an ethical company, while in reality, it turns a blind eye to the fact that its suppliers work for wages below the poverty line and without adequate social protection.

In parallel to the union’s legal campaign, the Italian prosecutor’s office is also investigating the case. It has called on chains such as McDonald’s, Poke House, Carrefour, and KFC to submit documents relating to the matter.
