Today, in a series of presentations by trade unions, associations and groups that fight against the exploitation of Platforms in the world, the International Association of App-based Transport Workers (IAATW – The International Alliance of App-based Transport Workers). IAATW is a global trade union bringing together people working for Internet Platforms.
IAATW was founded in January 2020 at an international conference of app-based transport trade unions organized by United Private Hire Drivers (from the UK, now known as the App Drivers & Couriers Union).
One of the first actions was a campaign launched in July 2020 (together with the App Drivers and Couriers Association and the non-governmental organization Worker Info Exchange) to support Uber drivers in filing legal complaints against the company for lack of access to their personal data.
In February 2021, British judges ruled in favor of the IAATW’s App Drivers & Couriers Union that Uber drivers should be considered employees. Subsequently, IAATW affiliates commenced a similar case in the South African courts.
