Just three days ago [March 30, 2026], the Indian state of Telangana passed the Gig Workers Welfare Bill.
Key provisions of the bill:
– Recognition of platform workers (of all types) as full-fledged employees
– Establishment of a Platform Worker Welfare Board
– Establishment of a Social Security Fund
– Mandatory registration and issuance of a unique identifier for each worker
The new law will cover hundreds of thousands of platform workers in Telangana, providing them with formal recognition as employees and social protection, similar to similar regulations in other Indian states (such as Rajasthan and Karnataka).
