In our series of presentations by trade unions, associations and groups that fight against Platform exploitation – today unusually: Attorney General of the State of New York, Letitia James. Ms. James won election to this position in 2018 and is the first African American and first woman to hold this position.
A few days ago, the Prosecutor organized a press conference during which she announced the conclusion of an agreement with Uber and Lyft Platforms. Under the agreement, companies will pay $328 million in compensation to over 100,000 employees for stealing their wages.
James said this is the largest wage theft settlement in the office’s history.
The case had been dragging on since 2015, when the New York Taxi Drivers’ Association informed the U.S. Attorney’s office about the practices of both platforms.
The settlement closes this case, under which Lyft will pay PLN 38 million and Uber PLN 290 million. And we wonder about one thing: 100,000 robbed and no one goes to prison?
