The Mayor of New York City and the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection (DCWP) have released a report showing that, thanks to enforcement of new tip protections, platform delivery workers in the city earned an additional $104 million from January to July 2026.
This is the result of consistent enforcement of New York City law. In December 2023, the city implemented a mandatory minimum wage for over 70,000 delivery workers working for platforms. In response, platforms modified their app interfaces to hide or impede the ability for customers to add a tip at the time of ordering (e.g., by making this option available only after the delivery has been completed). In response, the city passed a law requiring apps to clearly display tip options. Platforms attempted to challenge these regulations in court, but the city authorities won all their cases.
