The Dutch Labor Inspectorate (Arbeidsinspectie) announced the suspension of UberEats’ operations in Amsterdam for a month. This decision stems from the platform’s repeated failure to verify the work permits of individuals working as delivery drivers.

Inspections conducted revealed that approximately 60% of verified delivery drivers were working without the proper documentation or work permits. The Ministry of Social Affairs accuses UberEats of repeatedly providing false information about the effectiveness of its digital verification systems, which, according to officials, are easily circumvented by those working without the appropriate permits.

The platform has, of course, already launched a campaign warning that a month-long ban would be “catastrophic” for the local economy. According to their analyses, restaurants in Amsterdam could lose up to 27% of their revenue. And that delivery drivers and consumers will also suffer.
