The Spanish daily El País again published an extensive text about the situation of people working for the Glovo Platform. A few days ago, the Spanish Labor Inspectorate issued an order for Glovo to immediately conclude employment contracts with over 40,000 people who previously had the status of a “subcontractor”. So many accounts and people have been identified so far since the beginning of this Platform, i.e. since 2014, and this is only the beginning of this process.
According to conservative estimates, currently 12,000 people work for the Platform in Spain alone – this number only includes registered accounts, excluding the so-called people subletting other people’s accounts.
As you might have guessed, Glovo is appealing all these decisions in the courts. At the same time, the Platform does not say what it plans to do if it loses these cases. Perhaps such a cycle will emerge: a person registers on the Platform, works as a “subcontractor”, the office finds him and orders him to be employed under an employment contract, so the Platform employs him and fires him at the same time. Over and over again.
To prevent this, the Spanish prosecutor’s office announced that it will no longer investigate individual cases, but will analyze the entire business model of the Platform, because perhaps the illegal employment of “subcontractors” lies at its basis.
It is also worth recalling that Glovo has already collected over EUR 253 million in penalties and unpaid social security contributions.
