It has been known for three days that the huge investment fund Prosus has reached an agreement to take over shares in the Just Eat Takeaway.com corporation, which runs the Delivery Platform in Poland known as Pyszne.pl. The Prosus fund belongs mainly to the Naspers corporation, and deals with investments in the internet industry. So far, it has invested in, among others, the Olx, Otomoto and PayU payment systems operating in Poland. But also in several other Delivery Platforms: Swiggy, Flink, ifood and Oda. But from the Polish perspective, the most interesting thing is that Prosus also has shares in Delivery Hero. And Delivery Hero runs the Delivery Platform in Poland known as Glovo.
Of course, all this fuels the imagination, and many people are already saying: Glovo will take over Pyszne.pl. Will it really happen? There are many doubts. Firstly, the transaction must first be approved by the shareholders. Secondly, the European Union will probably start the procedure against excessive concentration. Thirdly, it is completely unknown what strategy Prosus will adopt towards these Platforms. Maybe it will merge them, maybe it will leave them as separate entities? Just as Olx is to some extent a competitor to Otomoto. Prosus sometimes behaves like a classic investment fund. It buys, and then sells it. In October 2024, it sold all its shares in the Tazz Platform operating in Romania. It was bought by a competing Platform – Wolta (yes, yes, that Wolta). It is also important that Prosus tried to take over Just Eat a few years ago, but was overtaken by another investor – Takeaway.
It was announced that the potential transaction is to be worth EUR 4.1 billion. Okay, a lot of money. But does it change our lives and our working conditions in any way? If the Platforms merge, will we earn more? Or will we no longer be at risk of being fired at any time because the Algorithm decided so?
