It is now certain that the European Union Directive on Work for Internet Platforms, which has been developed for several years, has failed. Its adoption during the Spanish presidency was supposed to be a great success. Now Belgium has taken over the presidency. What will be the fate of the directive now? Will it be negotiated from scratch or just regenerated? We’ll see.
But leaks show that 13 member states were against it. These were Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Lithuania, Latvia, Germany, Sweden, Hungary and Italy.
Of course, it is not clear why they were against it: maybe they gave in to lobbyists representing the Platforms, or maybe they also thought that the Directive was “too soft” and should set the bar higher for corporations?
The situation is not made easier by the fact that there will be elections to the European Parliament this year. And perhaps no one will simply be interested in adopting the Directive and only in pretending to work on it.
