In its latest edition, the online magazine Futures of Work published an article analyzing the online solidarity campaign taking place in Greece in September 2021. On September 15, 2021, the e-food.gr platform (belonging to Delivery Hero, present in Poland as Glovo) changed the employment status of people working as suppliers from full-time employees to so-called “independent subcontractors”. Of course, under threat of dismissal.
As part of the solidarity campaign, the hashtag #cancel_efood gained popularity overnight on Twitter, with social media users calling on the public to uninstall the e-food app from their phones and give it negative ratings on Google Play. Tens of thousands of people joined the action. Within two days, the app’s rating dropped from 4.7 to 1. Reviews clearly pointed to the company’s behavior towards employees as the reason for this low rating.
Of course, the online campaign was supported in real life by trade unions calling for strikes in defense of employees.
