Yesterday we presented five potential threats to the implementation of the Platform Work Directive (read here).
Today we continue the topic: we asked representatives of two Trade Unions bringing together people working as suppliers for Platforms to comment on our text.
Stanisław Kierwak, OPZZ of the Confederation of Labor at Pyszne.pl:
The directive is, above all, an opportunity to civilize work for platforms in Poland. We cannot waste this opportunity. Our union has already turned to the Ministry with detailed questions and proposals regarding implementation. We are waiting for a response, the matter will probably move forward after the holidays. We will try to participate in the law-making process and protect the interests of employees. We encourage everyone to support these activities, as our working conditions in the coming years will depend on them. We understand the concerns that the new law will not change anything, after all, the platforms have been avoiding paying taxes for many years, breaking labor law and facing no consequences. We believe that it is worth fighting and trying to change it – at this point we see real chances for it
Ivan Strzelbicki, Employee Initiative of Couriers and Couriers
These concerns related to the implementation of the directive are rather socio-political realities than possible threats.
It is the case everywhere that the government is distant from the citizens in the processes of creating some regulations or political decisions. Everyone can answer a simple question: does a citizen feel that he or she participates in political processes and does the government ask him or her for his or her opinion in decisions that are important for society? This gap between the government and the people is at different levels in different countries. And this directly depends on the activity and involvement of citizens in the functioning of politicians and those in power, who, above all, must take into account the opinion and interests of the nation they basically serve. Creating regulations regarding Platform employees, without paying attention to their opinions and experience, would be an indicator of the existing socio-political pathology. We, as the Union, will try to reach the government with our information. And we’ll see what comes of it.
