In mid-April, over a hundred people working as delivery drivers for the Zepto Platform went on strike in Ahmedabad, India. The delivery drivers decided to take this step out of a sense of helplessness in the face of a massive problem with the algorithm. The app was directing employees to clients using non-existent roads and private properties. This isn’t just a problem with orientation. The algorithm calculates delivery drivers’ salaries based on the length of the commute. There is also concern that the algorithm evaluates delivery drivers’ performance based on commute times. If the commute is significantly longer than the app predicts, the rating is immediately downgraded.
