Byron Camilleri, the Maltese Minister of Internal Affairs, Security and Employment, has presented a completely new approach to working for platforms. He announced that all individuals working as Platform Suppliers have become members of Trade Unions. This move is intended to automatically provide them with employment rights, but above all, protection against unfair dismissal.
In his statement, he wrote: “In recent months, we have been very firm towards platforms like Bolt and Wolt, and those that employ Suppliers. We have made it clear that there is no room for abuse and have even rejected new applications. Despite criticism, we have not given up. (…) We will continue to emphasize that there is no room for abuse in our country and that all employees have equal opportunities. We will remain vigilant.”
It is worth noting that in Malta, the situation is almost identical to that in Poland: all Suppliers work through Fleet Partners.
