Platforms are reporting increasing interest in their services. And this is regardless of the country they operate in, and in which industry: whether it is people transport services or express delivery services.

But as this sector develops, the threats to the safety of people working for Platforms are increasing.

The African Platform Workers Representatives group reports on increasingly frequent cases of violence against people working as drivers. These attacks are no longer just robberies, but also kidnappings and murders. In 2022, 13 drivers were murdered in South Africa. In Kenya, 15% of drivers experienced violence (in 2022-2023), in Nigeria the same applied to 30% of drivers, in Tanzania – 20%.

Platforms are trying to respond – of course in their own way. In applications, they add an “emergency button” function, which usually simply starts a phone call to the police emergency number. But does this improve the safety of a person with a knife to the neck?
