The French Social Security Authority (URSSAF) is demanding payment of €1.7 billion from the Uber platform (passenger transport). This amount covers the period 2019-2023. The French authority believes that Uber drivers should be classified as employees, not self-employed. Therefore, the company should pay standard social security contributions on their earnings.
URSSAF’s actions are based on a decision by the French Court of Cassation, which found in 2020 that Uber drivers are in a “relationship of subordination” with the platform, which is a characteristic of an employment contract.
