We return to the topic of the EU Platform Work Directive. Many people working for Platform have high hopes for it. They say it clearly: its reasonable implementation is a chance to end exploitation. Maybe so. But we want to draw your attention to two recent events.

First: on Wednesday [June 11, 2024], meetings regarding the Copyright Directive were held in the Sejm. The directive was adopted in 2019 and was to be implemented within two years. And what? And 5 years have passed and the work is still ongoing.

Second: the state of California (USA) in 2020 enacted a law forcing Platforms to provide labor rights to their drivers and suppliers. This law was challenged by the Uber Platform. And the case has been dragging on for 4 years, making it no longer valid! 4 years! The amount spent on handling this matter shows how the introduction of this law will affect the Platform’s operations. So far, Uber has spent $500 million on it!

So should we still have any illusions about the EU Directive?
