Delivery platforms (and transport platforms too) declare that customer safety is their absolute priority*. That’s why they solemnly assure us that they thoroughly verify the identities of their employees (called subcontractors).
They are so committed to this that you can easily find online advertisements for active delivery accounts for rent or purchase, either for a one-time fee or a commission. The Tech Transparency Project estimates there may be as many as 800,000 such accounts. On Facebook alone, there are 80 publicly available groups that openly declare their purpose: “Uber accounts for rent.”
And why aren’t delivery platforms really fighting this? Because it suits them. It creates an entire ecosystem of exploitation by the exploited. It creates a layer of uncertainty for workers, allowing for constant and ongoing wage cuts.
*From what we know, profit is paramount for companies, but we may be wrong.
