Spanish radio station Cadena SER published an analysis of the difficult situation facing the Glovo platform in this country on its website. After years of legal disputes, Glovo was forced to regulate the status of those working as delivery drivers and switch from a “false self-employment” model to employment contracts.
Generally, organizational chaos has reigned within the platform. Despite formally employing thousands of couriers, mass layoffs have been reported in Barcelona and other cities. Delivery drivers are reporting that the company is using “automatic layoffs,” sending identical, pre-made forms instead of providing individual justifications.
Of course, many delivery drivers have been dismissed in situations that should have been absolutely justified. The platform does not recognize sick leave or other life circumstances. A case was described of a delivery driver who was dismissed while on sick leave due to a broken arm (an accident at work). Another employee was fired while caring for his mother in the hospital, despite having previously informed his supervisor.
Furthermore, the platform has adopted an aggressive strategy in court. Lawyers cited in the article note that Glovo representatives rarely attend mandatory settlement meetings before unfair dismissal lawsuits, which prolongs the proceedings and makes it difficult for employees to pursue their rights.
