Last Tuesday [20/08/2024], the London Fire Brigade (UK) organized training for people working as suppliers on the safe use of electric bicycles. The training took place at a fire station in Shoreditch, previous training sessions took place in Ealing, Wimbledon and Marble Arch.
These trainings are a slightly delayed response from the Deliveroo Platform. Last September, a Delivery worker was seriously injured when his electric bike caught fire while charging at home.
The fire brigade said that last year there were 155 e-bike and 28 e-scooter fires reported in London, and so far this year there have been around 100 e-bike and e-scooter fires – an average of one fire every two days .
During training, London Fire Brigade recommended taking simple safety measures:
– advises against self-conversion of ordinary bicycles to electric ones using kits purchased online, because “they can be very dangerous” and “pose a greater risk of fire”
– recommends using the services of a professional or competent person to convert the bicycle and purchase a new battery, advises against buying a used one
– use an appropriate charger, warning against overcharging the battery and leaving the charging battery unattended
– also warns against charging electric bicycles on the escape route, e.g. in the corridor
